Police have arrested three people after they stole a suitcase from an elderly couple.

The couple in their late 80s were at the train station in Sandnes on Tuesday morning, on their way to Eastern Norway to celebrate Christmas.

It was after a local train in the direction of Oslo had stopped on the platform in Sandnes, that their red and green suitcases disappeared, the police in the south-west write on Twitter.

The theft happened on the platform itself. Their suitcase contained clothes and Christmas presents, and the couple also brought a bag of holly. The latter was found on the stairs on the way to street level, according to the police.

Operations Manager Olaug Bjørnsen tells VG that the couple was on their way to Eastern Norway to celebrate Christmas when the theft took place.

– They just had to go on the train without their belongings.

After requesting information, the police got in touch with a taxi driver, who stated that he had driven some passengers with a suitcase that matched the description.

At an address close to the city center in Sandnes, they found the stolen suitcase and its contents. All the gifts were wrapped up.

Two women in their 20s and 40s and a man in his 30s were in the taxi, but only two of them were apprehended at the address. The third hid in an apartment nearby.

Gets the suitcase back

The elderly couple’s belongings are now on their way from Stavanger to Oslo, where the suitcase will be handed over to their rightful owners.

– It is a joy in these times, that we managed to track down the goods and send it to Oslo. I think it will be a nice Christmas present for them, says Bjørnsen.

VG has been in contact with the train company GoAhead, which has sent a picture of the gifts safely on its way to Oslo together with the conductor Stig.

Operations Manager Bjørnsen states that the perpetrators are well known to the police.

Police write on Twitter that two of the people are in custody. However, all three are charged with theft in the case.
