A growing wave of crime has taken Israel by surprise. There is a significant disproportion among the actions of religious communities – ČT24 – Czech Television

According to CT foreign correspondent David Borek, Israel has ignored the growing wave of crime in the past. “Many Israeli politicians have not seen a link between crime and murder. They didn’t see a package that was related. And that it is not an ad hoc series, but that it is really a phenomenon, “said Borek.

According to Borek, there is a disproportion in the context of violent crime. While the Jews, who number nearly seven million, commit about thirty to forty murders a year, the Arab community of about two million commits about a hundred murders a year.

A partial explanation of why this is the case is the question of the link to the economic situation of the population. The Arab community lives in an economically less efficient environment with higher unemployment, which is most pronounced among the youngest adult Arab population. According to critics, the state is not helping them to obtain better educational and working conditions.

Violence permeates religious groups

The result is social pathology, especially for young offenders, who are often unemployed or even unemployable. However, in addition to violent crime, there is also the phenomenon of gangs, which are characterized by drug trafficking, violence and dispute resolution. This increases the tension between families and clans, and there are shootings and assassinations. This is also linked to the rise of the black market in firearms.

At the same time, the Arab population in Israel differs ethnically and tribally, and the crime committed also has a hidden political significance. As it turned out, violent looting scenes across religious groups have recently been an exception, with synagogues burning.

The Israeli authorities have been recording the overall trend for a long time. The government in Jerusalem now promises drastic redress. “The state will mobilize everything to protect the Arab population from crime, illegal weapons, murder and the payment of fuel,” said Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. Police reinforcements and investments are to be directed to Arab cities.
