If you know New York’s East River, you may have heard that the water is not very clean there. In fact, the river has been considered dirty since the 1930s. New Yorkers are generally aware that it is polluted and not suitable for swimming, but the “+ POOL” project may soon change all that. This floating pool proposal should allow New Yorkers to return to the waters of the East River while having a positive impact on the environment.

Indeed, this crazy dream will certainly come true thanks to the work and the boundless imagination of four architects. The latter (Archie Lee Coates IV, Jeff Franklin, Dong-Ping Wong and Oana Stanescu) designed an Olympic-sized public swimming pool in the shape of a “+” which could be created in the East River. Initially, about 10 years ago, the idea seemed hard to believe. But after many presentations and meetings with local public actors, it seems that it is more and more credible. The + POOL project has drawn the attention of New York mayoral candidate Andrew Yang, as well as celebrities such as Kanye West and Neil Patrick Harris. No official date has yet been mentioned but one thing is certain: it is moving in the right direction.
The designers explain that this new step comes after nearly two years of review of the project by the city and the NYCEDC (New York City Economic Development Corporation). During this period, the designers of this unique pool in the world worked hand in hand with several engineers specializing in water filtration in order to improve its capabilities. And the least we can say is that the results were particularly conclusive.

A swimming pool with exceptional filtration capacities
The current proposal would be capable of filtering 2,271,000 liters of polluted water from the East River every day. As you will have understood, this means that its impact goes far beyond the simple possibility for New Yorkers to swim and enjoy a moment of relaxation with a breathtaking view of Manhattan. The many positive points of the + POOL project are winning over a large part of the public in the city, both culturally and environmentally.
We just have to hope that this incredible public swimming pool sees the light of day!
