a female renewal for the overseas municipalities

The political earthquake of this second round, in Martinique, occurred in Rivière-Pilote, a city dear to the independentist Alfred Marie-Jeanne, who directed it for twenty-nine years before handing over, in 2000, to one of his lieutenants. This bastion of “patriots” fell into the hands of the various right-wing Jean-François Beaunol. A ballot which seems to have restored some colors to the local right with the election of Yan Monplaisir, first vice-president of the Assembly of Martinique, which largely prevails in the commune of Saint-Joseph, where he stood for the third time.

Martinique will have a fourth mayor in office with the election of Aurélie Nella as head of Ducos, the third economic city on the island. At 35, she becomes the youngest mayor of Martinique. The Martinican Progressive Party left some feathers during this second round since it lost its stronghold of the Marin, detained for thirty years by Senator Rodolphe Désiré. It is the various left José Mirande who comes first in front of Yvonne Tritz, the candidate of the outgoing mayor.

Eight new mayors were elected to La Réunion. Such a renewal had not happened since 2001 but the most striking fact remains that four of the twenty-four municipalities on the island will be headed by women. In Saint-Denis, Ericka Bareigts (PS), the former overseas minister, is the first woman to manage the largest overseas city. Succeeding Gilbert Annette, she easily won her duel with the president of the region, Didier Robert (div. D.).

Strong participation in Mayotte

In Saint-Paul, MP Huguette Bello, supported by the local left, finds her lost chair in 2014. In La Possession, the ecologist Vanessa Miranville retains her mandate. The surprise comes from Saint-Louis where the novice Juliana M’Doihoma (div. D.) Defeats the two former mayors, Cyrille Hamilcaro and the communist Claude Hoarau. The PCR, once the most powerful party on the island, retains only one municipality, Sainte-Suzanne.

Mayotte is distinguished by a participation of more than 70%. Of the seventeen outgoing mayors, only seven have been reappointed.

A short distance from the second independence referendum on October 4, the municipal elections did not upset the balance in New Caledonia. The separatists keep 19 out of 33 municipalities, mainly in the north and the Loyalty Islands, while the loyalists maintain their strongholds in the south of the archipelago.

This second round confirmed the descent into hell of Caledonia together (CE), severely beaten during the provincials of 2019. Former stronghold of deputy Philippe Gomès, the village of La Foa fell into the hands of Nicolas Metzdorf, 32, who slammed the door of CE to create his own stable less than a year ago. On the FLNKS side, the rivalry between its two main components turns to the advantage of the Caledonian Union (UC), to the detriment of the Palika. The UC wins the city of Koné, capital of the North province and pivot of economic rebalancing, just like the island of Ouvéa.
