Prime Minister Rutte has called on the British government to respect the agreement with the European Union. “I call on the British to continue to act in the spirit of the Withdrawal Agreement which is legally binding and not to do anything contrary to it,” he said in the House of Representatives.
He assumes that the British will keep their agreements. Prime Minister Johnson’s government released a bill that is contrary to the agreements he had made with the EU. This mainly concerns the status of Northern Ireland.
Johnson doesn’t want border controls between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom, as has been agreed. Under the agreement, the border will be in the sea and not between Northern Ireland and Ireland, where border traffic and the economy would be severely hampered by controls.
Undermine
Last night, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was very concerned. “This would violate international law and undermine confidence.”
