The endocrinology consultant explained in a special statement to Al-Youm Al-Sabea that the thyroid gland affects many vital processes in the body and has a major role in various body functions. In general, the gland’s hormones are linked to all cells of the body, so they contribute to activating many genes that lead to Ultimately, it increases the metabolic rate and generates heat within the body.

In addition, the functions of the thyroid gland also included increasing the process of burning fat, increasing the calories that the body needs at rest, increasing the process of building and making proteins within the body, regulating the process of burning calories, activating the process of breaking down carbohydrates, and contributing to reducing fat, maintaining the heart rate. A normal heart, enhances bone health, and helps the gland regulate calcium levels in the blood, among others.

Dr. Ayman also added that there are complications resulting from any disorder in the thyroid gland that exposes the person to the risk of developing some diseases, including activity or hyperactivity of the gland, or underactive thyroid gland, and this sometimes occurs as a result of a disorder in the pituitary gland, pointing out that the activity of the thyroid gland increases. The consultant addresses the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, which include excessive nervousness, rapid mood swings, rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, insomnia, muscle weakness, brittle nails, hair loss, weight loss, and the patient’s inability to tolerate high temperatures. Swelling in the front of the neck, a feeling of shortness of breath, and pain in the throat accompanied by a hoarse voice, in addition to difficulty swallowing.
