The motive remains unclear
Pavlina Mitkova, 39, was sentenced by a court in the town of Macerata to 25 years in prison for the premeditated murder of her 6-year-old girl Jennifer, Italian media reported.
Earlier, the prosecutor in the case, Francesca Perlini, had asked for life imprisonment. The Bulgarian woman was also deprived of parental rights over her other daughter. The tragedy with little Jennifer happened on January 8, 2020. The whole community in the small municipality of Serviliano in the Marche region was shocked – Jennifer was found dead after a fire in the family home.
But then it turned out that the death occurred hours before the fire due to suffocation with a pillow.
According to the court, the mother deliberately caused the fire by opening the gas tap of the stove in the kitchen, then set it on fire. She did all this in order to simulate a fire and cover up the traces of her child’s strangulation. She even burned her face and hands during the fire. Initially, Mitkova said the burns were due to attempts to get Jennifer out of the apartment.
From the beginning, however, Mitkova’s story did not convince the authorities, as the girl had no signs of burns on herself, his body was not even touched by the flames. Experts also found that there were no traces of toxins in the blood, as is the case with suffocation from a fire. So after two autopsies, it was concluded that Jennifer was strangled with a pillow by her mother. However, the court could not say what the motives were for the murder.
On the night in question, Mitkova took her other 4-year-old girl out of her home unharmed. The father, 40-year-old Ali Krasniki, a Kosovo citizen working as a construction worker, was not in the apartment on the fateful night. This was also proved by the examination of the video cameras in the area of the home.
Even after she was accused of setting fire to her home and causing the death of her child, Mitkova said she was innocent. Although she had no motive for her crime, it was not clear why she did not call for help during the fire. A passing driver called the firefighters. Everyone wondered why Mitkova went out with only one child.
It was not until late November 2020, or 11 months after the tragedy, that little Jennifer’s body was buried in the town of Fermo. Until then, it is at the disposal of the judiciary. Only then was Ali Krasniki’s father able to hug his younger daughter for the first time, who was entrusted to social services.
Now the 6-year-old child will live with his father. According to the media in Macerata, his lawyers were disappointed with the mother’s 25-year sentence. “We are pleased that she was found guilty of premeditated murder and that she was considered the sole perpetrator, although her defense wanted to involve her husband as well. We demanded a heavier sentence. 25 years is a very light sentence, considering that we are talking about a murdered child and a broken family, “Maria Krasina Aszenzo, Ali Krasniki’s lawyer, told the media.
