A bacterium has been detected on several beaches in Estonia. Some cases of infection have been detected – Abroad – News

These are non-toxic strains with no epidemic potential, but they can cause vomiting, diarrhea, wound infection, ear and skin infections, and other problems. Young children, people with weakened immune systems, and people with wounds or ulcers on the skin are especially at risk.

According to the Health Board, water-borne microorganisms are becoming increasingly important. The reasons are related to climate warming, more intensive water transport and human movement, as well as other factors.

As the climate warms, the overall seawater temperature rises, which together with salinity creates favorable conditions for the spread of various bacteria to cooler areas, including the Baltic Sea and the Estonian coast.

Even a short but very hot summer at the end of June and beginning of July created favorable conditions for the spread of the cholera vibrio. Currently, two or three cases of infection have been identified. In all cases, they were children under one year of age. In other Baltic Sea countries, such as Sweden and Finland, the situation is similar.
