This Wednesday, at the press conference following the eighth National Security Council since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic in Belgium, Sophie Wilmès announced the start of the second phase of deconfinement, scheduled for Monday, May 18. New measures have therefore been announced and confirmed by the Prime Minister such as the reopening of markets under strict conditions, or the restart of contact trades.
The now well-known virologist Marc Van Ranst returned this Wednesday evening to the confirmation of this second phase of deconfinement with our colleagues from VTM NEWS. According to him, it is now that we give the “most chance to the virus”. “We must now wait and follow the figures very carefully and hope that everything will go in the right direction”, he begins before warning about what could happen from next Monday.
“Of course, we are now giving this virus a better chance. Not with the measures that will be implemented next Monday or even with the first – namely the reopening of B2B businesses – but rather with the reopening of all stores as well as the “4 people rule”. It gives the virus a better chance “, estimated the Flemish virologist.
Because, he recalls, Belgium has now taken a certain number of deconfinement measures. We do not yet know the effects that these will have on the propagation curve of the coronavirus and in our hospitals. “We are only beginning to see the effect of the first phase [la 1a, NDLR] “, underlines Marc Van Rans.
We still have to wait before seeing the effect of phase 1b and phase 2. But for him, it remains clear that the most dangerous phase for a possible resumption of the epidemic in Belgium is phase 1b, with the resumption in particular of social contacts.
