San Diego, Calif.- Less than three weeks after arriving in San Diego, Robinson Canó’s time with the Padres could be coming to an end.

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported Wednesday that the club is expected to request Cano be optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.
If that happens, Heyman added that the veteran infielder will decline the request and become a free agent.
Designated for assignment by the Mets on May 2 and released just days later, Canó signed with the Padres on May 13.
The club hoped the eight-time All-Star could at least give him a boost, but in 12 games he has cut his percentage to .091/.118/.091.
