Coronavirus drug: does this nasal spray protect your lungs?

In a feverish search for a coronavirus drug, a study now reveals evidence of the positive effects of an antiviral nasal spray.

British researchers are hoping to discover one Coronavirus drug currently in an antiviral that could be administered as a nasal spray after study results revealed the positive effects of this. The active ingredient is apparently able to block the deadly virus.

Coronavirus drug: study reveals positive effects of this nasal spray

Researchers from Pneumagen, a subcontractor of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, found evidence of the positive effects of an antiviral drug in the fight against coronavirus in a three-part laboratory study that dealt with the prevention of coronavirus.

The active ingredient, which the company markets as “Neumifil”, is currently used against the flu virus, but may also be able to act as a coronavirus drug. The laboratory study showed that the active substance appears to be able to block but also to treat the SARS-CoV-2 infection, the cause of the coronavirus, and therefore to protect the lungs of patients.

The preparation brings these special features with it

“Classic anti-virus drugs actually only attack part of the machinery of the virus, but our active ingredient is able to prevent them from penetrating the cells at all,” says study leader and biology professor at St. Andrews University Gary Taylor. This prevents the virus from getting stuck in the airways and ACE-2 receptors.

According to Taylor, the antiviral agent can be used in the form of a nasal spray, which can be administered weekly or every few days, reports the Dailymail.

Pneumagen plans to begin clinical trials shortly and will work closely with Public Health England, an executive agency of the UK’s Department of Health and Welfare, during this process. It will soon become clear whether the antiviral agent in the form of a nasal spray will prevail as a coronavirus drug.

Researchers recently achieved a breakthrough in coronavirus because a first vaccination was carried out a few days ago. But the danger is not yet over. The well-known evidence of a coronavirus disease is primarily fever, dry cough and body aches. Now, however, everything indicates that there is a new coronavirus sign can be seen on the toes.
