Legislative change in Australia could lead to restraint for cats – Dagsavisen

The bill was put forward by councilor Adin Lang and received unanimous support in the Australian city council in the town of Fremantle in Western Australia this week. It writes the newspaper The Independent.

The proposal for leashes for domestic cats is part of the work to gain control of the city’s cat population, and will lead to cats being banned in all public areas such as roads and surrounding nature areas.

– In the 70s, it was common for dogs to run loose in the streets. I expect that stray cats will also be a thing of the past, says the councilor behind the proposal, says Lang to the local newspaper Perth Now.

The proposal is to protect Australia’s rich wildlife from cats.

– But it will also protect the cats from being run over by cars or attacked by other cats.

Cats are already banned by law in 12 areas of Fremantle, as parks, golf courses and beaches and owners can be fined up to 100 Australian pounds for breaking the law.
