New York – A historic New York church has been destroyed by a major fire. Middle Collegiate Church in the East Village burned down after flames leapt from an empty five-story neighboring building at around 5 a.m. (local time) on Saturday. “We are shaken,” said Pastor Jacqueline Lewis. “We burned out like our house burned out; our hearts are broken as our doors are broken. ”

City councilor Carlina Rivera tweeted that there were no injuries.

The church was built in 1892. She was part of the Collegiate Churches of New York, a community whose history dates back to Dutch settlers in the early 17th century. According to information on the Church’s website, the bell in the clock tower rang the birth of the United States in 1776 and has since rung at the inauguration and death of American presidents and commemorations such as the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Lewis said she believed the bell survived the fire. Sure she was not yet on Saturday.
