889 kilos of cocaine found in container in Roosendaal

Investigation services found 889 kilos of cocaine in a container in Roosendaal. The container stood out because of heavy wooden beams. The drugs were hidden in those beams.

The find was made by the HARC team. This is a collaboration between customs, FIOD, seaport police and the Public Prosecution Service.

The search team discovered the container in mid-May, after a so-called hotel container was found a few days earlier in a large terminal at the port of Rotterdam. This is a special container in which people hide for a long time, hoping to quietly smuggle drugs off the site.

Brand-new chainsaws were found in the hotel container that was found. A few days later, the container was found in Roosendaal. That container was previously located near the hotel container on the port site. The Public Prosecution Service suspects that the chainsaws were intended to cut through the heavy wooden beams in this container, in order to be able to grab the 889 kilos of cocaine.

Thousands of kilos of drugs
In total, customs intercepted more than 3600 kilos of cocaine and 2600 kilos of heroin in the port of Rotterdam between 11 and 29 May. The find in Roosendaal is therefore also included. The total value of the drugs is more than 355 million euros. The drugs have been destroyed.
