88-Year-Old Woman Swallows Denture: Shocking Discovery and Treatment

An 88-year-old Asian woman from the United States was brought to the hospital UT Southwestern Medical Center in the state of Dallas by her son.

This is written by the news agency Jam Press.

No symptoms

The woman used dentures, but the part of the denture that belonged to the lower jaw was nowhere to be found: had the woman messed it up?

Tara (32) made a shocking discovery in the river

No one could understand where the teeth had gone.

The 88-year-old suffered from Alzheimer’s and had a history of strokes. She told the doctors that she had no problems with either swallowing, abdominal pain, nausea, pain or other symptoms.

The doctors ran a series of tests on her, all of which were apparently normal. The doctors therefore decided to carry out an endoscopic examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.

Surprise

When the endoscope was passed through the sphincter in the woman’s esophagus and into the stomach, the doctors made a startling discovery.

There, in the stomach, was the tooth.

Thought she was pregnant

The doctors decided to try to fish the tooth out of the stomach by using the endoscope as a “fishing rod”. After several attempts, they managed to remove the bite from the stomach.

– Pretty comon

It took them around two hours to remove the bite, and the woman was allowed to return home the following day.

Experts from the hospital say the operation has not caused significant damage to the patient.

– Bites are actually one of the most common when it comes to objects that are swallowed. It is also common to swallow chicken and fish bones and jewellery, the doctors say.

Furthermore, the doctors explain that the woman’s medical history with both dementia, stroke and lymphoma in the brain may have contributed to her being less aware of the foreign body moving through the digestive system.

– Underestimated danger

They say that is the explanation for the fact that she has not experienced symptoms such as abdominal pain, pain, problems swallowing or the like.

– Foreign bodies are an underestimated danger in adults, and especially in the elderly, where it can lead to serious injury or death.

The rare “penis flower” blooms: – It stinks!

A previous study has estimated that around 1,500 people die annually in the USA from this very phenomenon.

– In around 20 per cent of cases in adults, it is necessary to retrieve the objects with an endoscope. In around 1 per cent of cases, an emergency operation is necessary, the doctors explain.
