Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch informs the Darmstadt city council. Seven daycare centers are currently closed due to corona cases.

Since the start of the new school year in August, there have been 80 cases of corona infection in several schools in Darmstadt. Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens) announced this to the city council on Thursday, after the city had not provided any information in the past few weeks.

In the period from August 26 to November 4, 43 cases of infection were registered in vocational schools, 15 cases in elementary schools, ten in comprehensive schools, nine in high schools and three cases in private schools. Seven day-care centers – three municipal and four privately or church-owned – are currently closed. In the daycare centers, 24 employees and two children were infected with the pathogen in the past two months. When asked by the FR, the city did not want to name the schools and daycare centers – in contrast to neighboring districts, for example.

The city currently seems to be only partially prepared for a possible digital lesson. OB Partsch reported that 1300 tablets had been distributed to the schools. However, due to the different ideas of the schools, no learning software has yet been installed on the devices. Next Thursday, 2000 mobile loan devices, which the city’s education authority has procured, are to be distributed.

The city announced on Friday that all events of the city senior program would be canceled until the end of the year. This also included the Advent concert in the Darmstadt State Theater on November 29, 2020. On Friday, the Darmstadt Health Department registered 55 new infections with the coronavirus. In the Darmstadt clinics, 46 people are currently being treated with Covid-19 in the normal ward and a further twelve in the intensive care unit.
