50 countries pledge over € 14 billion to fight the deadliest diseases | NOW

A large group of countries has committed a record amount of € 14.3 billion to fight malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS. This happened at the Global Fund’s triennial conference in New York. Malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS are the diseases for which most people die in the world.

The money goes to education, hospitals, clinics and drug development. Searches are also paid for with it. The organization aims to eliminate AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by 2030.

The goal was to raise € 18 billion, but it didn’t work. However, the total amount of the nearly fifty countries is more than three years ago. Then 14 billion were raised at a conference in France.

According to the Global Fund, the crown crisis has raised awareness that “health problems around the world are intertwined”. Since its inception, the fund’s paid programs have saved about 50 million lives, a spokesperson said.

The Dutch government will contribute a total of 180 million euros over the next three years. Since the last conference, the Netherlands has contributed € 156 million. The US pledged the highest contribution with € 6 billion, followed by France (€ 1.6 billion), Germany (€ 1.3 billion) and Japan (€ 1.1 billion). Bill Gates has pledged 912 million euros through founding him. The European Union as an organization donates 715 million euros.

The Global Fund is an international organization founded in 2002. Its full name is Global Fund to Fight HIV / AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Every three years, the fund organizes a meeting to raise funds to fight the three deadliest diseases in the world.
