50 asylum seekers from Ter Apel to sports hall in Geleen | 1Limburg

Dozens of asylum seekers were transferred from Ter Apel to Geleen on Friday evening.

The asylum seekers are received in the Glanerbrook sports hall. It was set up for Ukrainian refugees, but is now used for the temporary reception of asylum seekers.

Rush
They probably stay there for more than 24 hours. The asylum seekers were transferred because of the great crowds in Ter Apel. Last Wednesday night, asylum seekers had to sleep outside, but were eventually transferred to waiting areas in the application center. “We now see room to respond to the urgent appeal of the COA and to offer this group of asylum seekers temporary accommodation. We feel obliged to do this from a human point of view,” says mayor Hans Verheijen of Sittard-Geleen. “Thanks to the help of our and a few other municipalities, the shelter in Ter Apel is getting some air, even if only for a while. †

Empty spots
Asylum seekers have also been temporarily accommodated in Zuidbroek, Groningen. According to a spokesperson, this is also a shelter that was actually intended for Ukrainians. But there are, according to the spokesperson, “a lot of empty spaces”. She also points out that people from Ter Apel have also left for places that have become available in regular reception. “With this outflow, we expect that there will be room for everyone who signs up in the coming days.”
