The majority of viruses evolve over time: this is normal. They take on new forms, which are called “variants”. You may have heard of one of them: Omicron. It is a new variant of the virus responsible for Covid.
It is not known how long this new variant has been transmitted. But it was first detected, on November 24, by scientists from South Africa.
They immediately reported it to WHO, the WorldHealth Organization. It is an agency of United Nations which aims at the well-being and health of all humans. This organization then alerted the whole world on the appearance of this new variant.

In France, 8 possible cases have been spotted. Tests are underway to find out whether people really have the Omicron variant or not.
He worries the specialists
This variant is talked about a lot, because it could be more contagious and better resist the vaccine. The risk of it spreading around the world is significant. Scientific studies are currently being carried out to find out more.
Some countries, such as Japan or Israel, have decided to close their borders to prevent this variant, still poorly understood, from arriving on their territory.
