450 more deaths in second week of December than expected | NOW

In the week of December 7-13, an estimated 3,550 people died, which is 450 more than usual for this time of the year. That reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) Friday. The death rate is also over fifty more than a week earlier, when 3,494 people died. Statistics Netherlands does emphasize that the mortality rate always increases somewhat in winter.

Since the last week of September, 5,300 more people have died than expected in this period, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics. This is roughly the same as the second corona wave, according to Statistics Netherlands.

In the first twelve weeks of the second wave, week 39 to week 50 of this year, 5,300 more people died than expected during this period. This is called excess mortality.

Statistics Netherlands adds that more men than women died last week, although more older women than men. The same was also noticeable during the first wave, when the excess mortality of men was 38 percent and in women 29 percent more than normal during the same period.

During the first wave of the corona pandemic (March 9 to May 4), this excess mortality was significantly higher, estimated at nearly 9,000. Statistics Netherlands knows with certainty that from March to June of this year, approximately 10,000 people died from the effects of COVID-19. They therefore attribute the entire excess mortality that was measured during the first corona wave to the corona virus.
