3 People Killed, Dozens Injured, Thousands of Houses Damaged

West Pasaman Earthquake, West Sumatra resulted in three deaths. Meanwhile, dozens of other people were injured as a result of the magnitude 6.1 earthquake.

“Yes. There are three people who died until this afternoon,” said Acting Head of the West Pasaman BPBD Executing Agency, Azhar, when confirmed by Detikcom, Friday (25/2/2022).

Azhar said the three victims were in Nagari Kajai, Talamau District. Talamau is one of the worst locations due to the West Pasaman earthquake.

“We are still collecting data. The team is still in the field, so we have not obtained the exact data. But looking at the conditions, the impact caused by the earthquake was quite extraordinary,” he said.

In addition to the dead and injured, the disaster is also estimated to have damaged thousands of houses.

“We estimate that more than 10,000 houses will be affected,” he said.

The earthquake occurred at 08.39 WIB, in Talamau, West Pasaman, West Sumatra. The results of the BMKG analysis show that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 0.14° North Latitude and 99.94° East Longitude, or precisely located on land at a distance of 12 km Northeast of West Pasaman, West Sumatra, at a depth of 10 km.

Aftershock in West Pasaman

BMKG recorded at least 7 aftershocks after the West Pasaman earthquake the M 6.1 strength.

“As of 09.35 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring showed that there was 1 foreshock with a magnitude of 5.2 and 7 aftershock activities with the largest magnitude of M 3.9,” said the Head of the Center for Earthquakes and BMKG tsunami, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno in his written statement, Friday (25/2/2022).
