The club has not yet been able to confirm the cause of death, but local media reported that Oygo had a heart attack.
“We are deeply saddened by the news,” Igor Vujichin, a spokesman for Crvena zvezda, told AFP.
Born in Lagos, the 2.16-meter-long, 141-kilogram center player played for Florida State University in the United States before arriving in Europe.
After the 2017/2018 season in the Belgrade team FMP, he moved to “Crvena zvezda”, where he spent two seasons, quickly becoming a fan favorite.
Ojo has been without a club since June 30, but still trained with Crvena zvezda.
However, his former team issued a statement mourning the loss of the “fun giant”.
“The sudden and shocking death of Michael Ojo has had a profound effect on everyone – the players, the coaches and the management of the club, who accepted him from day one and considered him his own,” Crvena zvezda said in a statement.
He also expressed his condolences to the Ojo family, teammates, coaches “and the many fans who enjoyed his performances”.
