26 studies suggest that infection with this virus can trigger prostate cancer

Researchers worldwide want to better understand cancer in order to treat it better. Two Australians found a surprising connection between viral infection and prostate cancer.

  • Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in Germany.
  • If the cancer is not recognized and treated early, the risk of death increases. Prostate cancer is the third deadliest cancer after lung and colon cancer.
  • A new analysis from Australia could pave the way for better early detection.

Little is still known about the causes of prostate cancer. Risk factors include genetic predisposition, old age and an unhealthy lifestyle. Unhealthy diet, alcohol and smoking are said to trigger the development of prostate cancer. However, a certain virus infection also favors the development of prostate cancer: after evaluating 26 studies, Australian scientists were able to demonstrate a clear connection between infection with HP viruses – human papillomaviruses – and prostate cancer.

HPV infection can promote cervical and prostate cancer

Infection with human papilloma viruses (HPV) is not uncommon: “About 80% of all sexually active people experience an HPV infection at least once in their life. An infection is accompanied by symptoms only in very rare cases, ”as the gynecologists report online:“ In 90% of the infected women, these infections heal in a period of up to 2 years without therapy and without consequences. About 10% of the women affected remain permanently infected and can develop cell changes in the cervix ”. Not only women, but also men are equally at risk of contracting HPV through intimate contact. Human papilloma viruses, or HPV for short, are among the most common viruses transmitted through intimate contacts. So far, more than 200 virus types are known. Some of these viruses are responsible for the formation of benign genital warts on the genitals, other types are significantly involved in the development of cervical cancer and other types of cancer on the vulva, vagina, anus, in the mouth and throat area or on the penis.
