Protests engulfed the Islamic Republic after the death of a young woman while in police custody.

Although the extent of the protests in the tens of thousands remains unclear Iran cities and towns, the demonstration movement is the most prevalent unrest in the country since 2019, when human rights groups reported hundreds of people killed in a violent crackdown, the media noted.

The Iranian government has also cut off internet access, tightening restrictions on popular platforms used to organize demonstrations, such as Instagram and WhatsApp.

The crisis in Iran began when people expressed their sorrow for the death of Masha Amini, a young woman who was arrested in Tehran by the country’s moral police last week for violating her strict dress code. Her death was harshly condemned by Western countries and the United Nations.

Police said Amini died of a heart attack and no violence was used against him. However, the woman’s family questioned what the authorities said.

Iran has fought waves of protests in the recent past, largely due to a protracted economic crisis exacerbated by US sanctions on its nuclear program. In November 2019, the country witnessed its deadliest violence since the 1979 Islamic revolution, amid protests over a state-controlled gasoline price hike.

Economic troubles remain a major source of public discontent, with the Iranian currency falling and unemployment high.

The administration of US President Joe Biden and European allies are working to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, under which Iran restricted its nuclear activities in exchange for easing sanctions, but the talks they have not made significant progress for a long time.
