22 Year Old Woman in Central Lombok Suspected of Monkey Pox: Health Officials Provide Update

CENTRAL LOMBOK, KOMPAS.com – A 22 year old woman from Labulia Village, Jonggat District, Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), was declared suspected of monkey pox or monkeypox.

The woman’s symptoms were first discovered on November 1 2023, and she is currently being treated at home.

Head of the NTB Health Service Lalu Hamzi Fikri said the woman’s blood sample had been submitted to the Ministry of Health Laboratory to confirm the victim’s disease status.

“The condition of the victim suspected of having monkey pox is in good condition. We have carried out contact tracing. But his condition is good, and we have sent his blood sample for lab testing,” said Fikri, Monday (14/11/2023).

According to him, the status of a suspect with monkey pox does not necessarily mean he is infected with the monkey pox virus. Fikri said that the term suspect in medical terms means indicated or there is suspicion because they have the same symptoms.

Fikri said, in the Health Quarantine Law, anyone who is suspected or exposed to a dangerous virus or outbreak must be given treatment in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP) regulated in the Health Law.

“It is our obligation to protect its spread. But this is just a suspect. So suspect status means being careful, you cannot immediately justify that this is a case of monkey pox,” said Fikri.

Currently, his party is still waiting for the results of the victim’s blood lab examination. The blood samples were submitted to the center several days ago, but have not yet received feedback from the central government.

“But even though they have suspect status, the victim must be advised to self-isolate. Suspect means suspicious. First we handle it locally because the case is local. The team has also carried out contact tracing,” said Fikri.

Fikri appealed to residents not to be paranoid or excessively afraid of the victim’s suspect status.

“This is still a suspect, people should not panic too much,” said Fikri.

Head of the Central Lombok District Health Service, Suardi, explained that the victim initially had symptoms of red spots on the victim’s body and had experienced a high fever reaching 36 degrees Celsius.

“Still suspected (suspect), that’s the term. We ask this patient to self-isolate,” he said.

Suardi explained that he was given treatment at Tripat Gerung Hospital, West Lombok, on October 30 2023. However, the victim’s fever did not go down.

“The family took the victim for treatment to Tripat Gerung Hospital and to the Ubung Community Health Center on November 3 2023. Thank God, the victim’s body temperature is now good,” said Suardi.
