Juan David Huertas, David Escobar, Pablo Mejía Bermudez and Lorduy Hernández are the members of Piso 21

“In the pandemic we saw the importance and responsibility we have as artists,” he says. Juan David Huertas. “Giving people moments to fly in their minds, to heal their hearts and feel accompanied,” adds one of the figures in front of Floor 21, the popular Colombian band, also made up of David escobar, Pablo Mejía Bermudez and Lorduy Hernandez, that today they talk with Teleshow and they express their desire to visit Argentina soon with a very clear wish -among many others-: to taste a barbecue.

The four urban music singers join the interview in virtual windows, each one from their place, complying with the protocols in accordance with these times, but without losing the chemistry they have on stage. “We are brothers,” says Hernández, and reveals that on trips they share everything: they settle in the room of whoever carries the video game console.

In a great year for Piso 21, a band that did not let itself be stopped by the adverse context. “It has been a beautiful year, despite the unusual,” reflects Mejía Bermudez.

Colombians, who with “You call me” exceeded 700 million views in YouTube– they repeated the pair together with Maluma to say goodbye to 2020 with “More than one” and they are betting on a new global success: “We hope it exceeds expectations by heaps”, they are excited.

“What a year they’ve had!”

Pablo: —It has been strange for everyone, but we have not stopped releasing music, connecting with the public. Songs keep getting hits every time we put them out. “More than one” closes this year with a flourish. It is incredible that in such a difficult year we have had so much good news to tell.

“How do you get along with each other?” How is the bond between the four?

Lorduy: —Brutal: we are brothers. We share on all trips. If you have Play in your room, we all go there.

“What do they play and who is the best?”

David: “There is a good level.” Before, those who played the most were Pablo and Lorduy. War was always being fought. Sometimes Pablo won, then he won four games in a row, and vice versa: Lorduy beat Pablo. But I already think that the four of us are at a level.

Pablo: “There is a good level.”

David: -Anything can happen.

Lorduy: —We play FIFA; well, soccer. We like to play that.

Football players all four.” Argentina is coming off a great loss with the death of Diego Maradona.

Pablo: —Of course it is… In fact, Juan Luis, Maluma, was a personal friend of his and he felt it a lot. We were talking to him in those days.

—What was it like to record again with Maluma?

Juan David: —We are very friends with Maluma. It is not something that people might think: that we come together for a strategy. We really like to share, and not just music: we look like five children every time we are together, making jokes, laughing. Recording with him is like meeting the family again, with that brother, that cousin that you hadn’t seen for a long time, and we really enjoyed it. We put that synergy together with a song like “Más de la una”, and it makes us very happy. The day we recorded the video we had a drink there, together, we celebrated and we told him everything that we respect and admire him, and he also told us the same thing. It will always be a pleasure to work and make music with someone you love so much …

– What musician do you dream of being able to record a song that hasn’t arrived yet?

David: -Many.

Lorduy: —Bruno Mars.

David: —Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber. Daddy Yankee is a benchmark in urban and world music. Ozuna; the combination of Ozuna and Piso 21 would be something incredible. Also, why not a theme with Bad Bunny? We are here to do everything. Get together with people who do other types of genres.

Lorduy: —Romeo Santos.

David: -Of everything! There is a lot of music, a lot of artists still to do.

– How is the bond with the fans?

Lorduy: – (laughs) Piso fans are beautiful. We love you very much, we thank you for everything. Those who go and pay a ticket for Piso 21, those who put the video on YouTube every day, those who upload Tik Tok, those who upload all the videos listening to “More than one”. It is a very nice link. We always stay connected on social media for fans to see the 21st floor update. There are some that we have a friendship with. Thankful to all.

“What is the weirdest gift you’ve had in these years?”

Pablo: —Bodices never fail to impress me when thrown on stage, bras, bras. That will always seem shocking to me, I have not gotten used to it. Every time you’re singing and your bras start to rain: “Hey, hey, what happened? Who was it?” (laughs)

“Who is the messiest of the four?”

Juan David: —Pablo.

“Pablo, anything to say about it?”

Pablo: —I am going to defend myself in the best way: yes, I am the messiest. Sometimes it’s better to be honest than to win an argument (laughs)

David: —Sometimes it’s better to be disorganized.

Pablo: —We all have our things, and I’m a mess.

“Now it’s your turn: what are you going to hold any of your colleagues responsible for?”

Pablo: —I am the messiest … and the most prudent! (Laughs)

“Who is the one who gets in the most trouble?”

Pablo: -Everyone equally. But problems, no.

Juan David: —The only problems we get into are good problems. Music stuff. But we are so judicious.

David: —We are at the limit of being people, or angels.

Pablo: —Almost, almost Dalai Lama. We are almost monks (laughs).

—When sitting down to write or decide on the playlist for a concert, who takes control of the situation?

David: -Everyone.

Pablo: —We have a group just for that.

David: —In general, in shows we already know which song starts, which one goes in the middle; also depending on the country, with which we close. They almost always go down the same line. As they are tours, they are not sporadic shows, there is a common thread: “At this moment the part of Profe comes out, the part of Lorduy, the part of Pablo; here the musicians come out, here they come in ”. It is a setlist. Before we did it every six or eight months. We don’t know when we’re going to do it anymore, but we sit down and divide the songs.

—They were just talking about a WhatsApp group. What are those groups like?

Pablo: —We have about ten groups only from Piso 21.

David: —Pure sticker, pure meme.

Pablo: —Dim handles the stickers.

David: —We all have the stickers. Every time one goes out with some that one dies of laughter.

—How does everything come with the new album?

David: -Amazing.

Pablo: —Brutal.

David: —An album with many sounds, with many genres. Very sincere, with good collaborations from new artists, from artists we admire. Music of many styles. It is music made with the heart, which has made us very satisfied.

—What did music bring to your life? What does it mean for each of you?

Juan David: —Saved our life: we had no plan B. Being able to earn a living doing something that you are passionate about is the best gift we could receive. Music not only represents our work but also a passion, an outlet. In this time of pandemic we saw the importance and responsibility that we have as artists: to give people moments to fly in their minds, to heal wounds, to heal their hearts, to feel accompanied. Music is not only saying: “Look how I sing beautifully”, but it is accompanying everyone in the happiest and saddest moments. Not only for us but for the entire planet. Music is part of the day to day.

David: —I’ve never had a plan B. Since I was little I loved music because of my parents. I was a music lover all my life. I loved boleros, music in English, pop. Music was always present and something told me that this was my path. I never doubted it. I was very stubborn, I always listened to my heart and felt that call of life.

—How will the toast be to receive 2021?

Lorduy: —In the family: with my dad, my mom, my sister, my daughter. Well, he will toast with a little juice. Being in the family is the best. Last year, when we had so much travel, so many tours, so many countries that we visited, right now suddenly we are taking advantage of the time with the family … It is the most blessed moment, I could say. Piso 21 is characterized by making good music, we are very familiar and very real. What else to be sharing with the family and with the people that one loves this end of the year?

Pablo: —This is the most longed-for New Year of all: there is not a year that everyone wants to end more than this. We will leave it behind. We close it in the best way with “More than one”. We want to tour again, to be able to go to Argentina and all the countries doing the show of our new album: Love in the times of perreo. It will be a memorable toast, as it deserves. 2020 deserves a toast of toasts.
