2024 Updates on JN1 Subvariant and New Vaccines in Mexico: What You Need to Know for Winter Season

Georgina Elizabeth Félix Bermúdez

How many of you are tired of hearing news about COVID-19? I confirm that most of us are; And if we add the accumulated exposure to this type of news in recent years, it results in an exorbitant amount of information that each of us can associate with negative experiences that the pandemic and confinement brought with them.

Once it has been proven that we are not the only ones to feel this way, I assure you that this content is not intended to alarm, much less cause uncertainty, but quite the opposite. Here you will be informed what you need to know this season so that you are calm, protected and can enjoy these last days of vacation:

We begin the year 2024 with news of a greater spread of the JN1 subvariant or also known as Pirola in people from different countries, including ours. Which proves that it is a fairly contagious variant, but fortunately not more deadly. This last characteristic is partly attributed to the fact that the majority of the population already has some protection (immunity) against the virus, which can last for many years through routine vaccination. This leads me to tell you a second piece of news: The COMIRNATY® (Pfizer SA de CV) and SPIKEVAX® (ModernaTx. Inc.) vaccines will be marketed in our country. These vaccines were manufactured with genetic material (mRNA) from the Ómicron XBB.1.5 variant, which is close to the subvariants currently circulating. In addition, the production of neutralizing antibodies that protect against serious illness and the need for hospitalization has been proven in both. Sales have begun with the COMIRNATY® vaccine in pharmacies and some private vaccination centers. The dose will cost approximately $850.00 Mexican pesos and a prescription will be required to apply the pediatric dose. It is important that you know that the dose and presentation of the vaccine are different for each age group (6 months to 5 years, 5 to 12 years and over 12 years); Those who are at the age limit between groups must conclude their outline with the presentation they started. The vaccine must be stored under refrigeration and administered in the same sales establishment. The injection is intramuscularly using a new syringe and needle, with prior cleaning of the skin with alcohol. If it is the first one you receive from this brand, you should apply a booster 21-28 days later; and, if you were recently vaccinated with another brand of vaccine, it is recommended to wait 2 months before receiving it.

It is also important that you know that, during this winter season, in addition to SARS-CoV-2, many other respiratory viruses circulate (such as Influenza, Rhinovirus, Metapneumovirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, etc.), so it is still advisable to wear a face mask when going. to closed places with an accumulation of people, especially if you suffer from a chronic illness, immune system depression, obesity, pregnancy, advanced age or are a health worker. In the event of a respiratory infection, the patient should wear a face mask and avoid going to closed places with other people so as not to infect others.
