Lower increase than expected
Menzis keeps the premium increase limited by tinkering with its own expenses. The health insurer also receives higher compensation for insured persons with a high risk of healthcare costs, the so-called risk equalization.
According to Menzis, the premium will increase slightly due to the growing demand for care, expensive treatments and rising costs due to inflation.
The new monthly premium from Menzis is lower than the outgoing cabinet expected on Budget Day. Leaked figures then showed that the government expected an increase in health insurance premiums of an average of 12 euros per month. DSW, traditionally the first health insurer to announce the new premium, is just below that at 11.50 euros.
When announcing the premium, Menzis also advocates the abolition of the voluntarily increased deductible. Allowing such a higher deductible, in exchange for a significant premium discount, affects solidarity, according to the health insurer.
Healthy and financially strong people often opt for a higher voluntary deductible and benefit from lower premiums, the cooperative says. In the meantime, less wealthy and chronically ill people with a mandatory deductible bear part of these burdens.
“This no longer fits within our healthcare system,” says Sloots, which is why the insurer wants to get rid of it.
