2024 Election Postponement Could Lead to Anarchy, Country Could Be Messy…

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Constitutional law expert Yusril Ihza Mahendra judge that the delay Election 2024 is a proposal that is “impossible to implement”.

Election postponement violates Article 22E paragraph (1) of the 1945 Constitution which orders elections to be held every five years.

“Once their position ends after five years, these officials, from the president to members of the DPRD have become former officials, aka cannot take any position actions on behalf of their positions,” he explained.

In a state of such vacuum of power, citizens have the right to protest at offices that force them to act as if they were legitimate offices.

“If such a situation occurs, there will be anarchy, everyone feels they can do whatever they want,” said Yusril.

“The country will fall apart because of it. The rule of law has completely disappeared,” he said.

The only way to postpone the 2024 General Election is to revise its constitutional basis, in this case by amending the 1945 Constitution.

“Without amendments, postponing the election is a real violation of the 1945 Constitution. The risk of violating the 1945 Constitution is a serious problem,” said Yusril.

Previously, three general chairmen of political parties, namely the Chairperson of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar, Chairperson of the National Mandate Party (PAN) Zulkifli Hasan and General Chairperson of the Golkar Party Airlangga Hartarto conveyed the discourse on postponing the election and extending the presidential term.

This discourse was initiated by Muhaimin who proposed that the 2024 General Election be postponed on the pretext of worrying about disrupting the country’s economic stability that year.
