A demonstration against the corona policy of the Dutch government got out of hand on Sunday. The police were bombarded with fireworks, and in response charged the demonstrators with horses. Twenty people were finally arrested.

A maximum of 200 attendees were admitted in advance for the manifestation at the Malieveld in The Hague. It was organized by ‘The Netherlands in Resistance, away with this cabinet’, an organization of opponents of the Dutch corona policy. However, several thousand protesters showed up, who also did not comply with the applicable corona regulations.
Dozens of members of the Mobile Unit of the Dutch police therefore surrounded the site in the course of the afternoon. People gradually left the Malieveld, but several thousand activists remained standing in the middle of the field. The police then carried out a charge to evacuate the site.
Later riots broke out again at the edge of the field after the police were bombarded with fireworks. A new charge with police horses was then carried out to remove the rioters from the site. A warning shot was also fired when a dog handler was attacked by protesters during the charge. His dog was kicked, and he himself was attacked by a fighting dog. The shot was then fired.
Because some protesters were out for confrontation, according to the police, violence had to be used. “The violence used is linked to strict conditions and is always checked afterwards.” In the end, about twenty arrests were made.
Two protesters were injured after police dogs were used against them for refusing to leave. In another incident, a woman was hit by a police bus. “This was emphatically not the intention,” said the police in a statement.
