NEW YORK – A 19-month-old boy in Brooklyn died after a family dog attacked him while in the care of other minors, a “horrific” incident in which charges are pending, according to New City Police. York.
Officers responded to a call Tuesday night around 10:43 p.m. about a dog attack on an apartment in the 300 block of East 17th Street in the Flatbush neighborhood. When they arrived, the uniformed police officer saw the little boy bloodied with bites on his neck and shoulder, according to the Police Department.
The boy and one other person were transported to Maimonides Hospital, according to the FDNY, where the boy was pronounced dead.
It is not clear who the other person was, but police said the boy was in the care of a 9-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy. Police say those two children were unharmed. The children were left in the care of their father, who was apparently at work and left the children unattended at the time of the incident, police said Wednesday.
The dog, described as a Rottweiler, was locked inside a room before the cops arrived and is now in the care of Animal Care and Control. It is unclear what officials plan to do with the dog.
According to New York City Police Department Deputy Director Michael Kemper of the Brooklyn Southern District Patrol, there was a previous dog attack in which the same animal bit one of the children “about ago one or two years. ” It is unclear which child was bitten in that incident.
Police say an investigation is underway and charges are pending in connection with Tuesday’s tragic death.
“This is a horrible scene, a terrible tragedy. I can’t imagine what the family is going through,” Kemper said.
