18 new deaths in 24 hours, slight increase in hospitalizations in 16 departments

The Covid-19 epidemic has claimed 18 lives since Wednesday in hospitals, bringing the total number of deaths to 30,138 since the start of the epidemic in France, the Directorate General of Health (DGS) announced Thursday.

The death toll in hospitals reached 19,597 and the decline in the number of patients with severe form in intensive care continues very slightly, with 481 patients, one less since Thursday. A total of 6,796 people are currently hospitalized for Covid-19 infection, a figure that continues to drop despite 119 new admissions recorded in 24 hours.

A slight increase in the number of hospitalizations was recorded over a week in 16 departments, as authorities multiply warnings of a possible resurgence of the epidemic, according to data from Public Health France updated Thursday evening.

The next update of the figures for social and medico-social establishments, where the death toll reaches 10,541 dead, is expected on Tuesday 21 July. Four regions account for 71% of patients hospitalized in intensive care: Ile-de-France, Grand-Est, Hauts-de-France and Guyana. In this last region, “the circulation of the virus remains worrying”, underlines the DGS in its press release.
