16-year-old Armita Geravand Attacked by Iranian Regime’s Hijab Police: Hospitalized in Coma

“Her name is Armita Geravand and she is only 16 years old. She is in a coma and is hospitalized with a head injury after she was allegedly attacked by the Iranian regime’s hijab police in the Tehran metro,” writes the well-known Iranian activist Masih Alinejad on X, formerly Twitter.

– She was physically attacked by the authorities at the Shohada station because they believed she was not wearing the mandatory hijab, according to the Iranian Human Rights Organization Hangawaccording to BBC.

Strict guarding

It was on Sunday that the 16-year-old was allegedly attacked. Hangaw writes that the teenager is now under strict guard at a hospital in the Iranian capital. Her family is said to have been deprived of their mobile phones to prevent images of the young girl from being spread, according to the organisation.

“Armita’s health situation has not improved and she is still in a coma,” writes Hengaw on Wednesday afternoon.

From the official Iranian side, it is reported that Geravand passed out on the subway. The Iranian television channel CCTV shows images of her being carried out of the metro.

The head of the Tehran metro, Masoud Dorosti, tells the Iranian news agency IRNA that their surveillance images show no signs of verbal or physical conflict between passengers and others, reports Reuters.

The news agency Reuters has spoken to two well-known Iranian human rights activists, who say the teenager was arrested by agents on the Tehran underground for violating the hijab requirement.

– We are following her case closely. She is in a coma in the intensive care unit and her condition is critical, says one activist, while the other says that the girl’s parents have been banned from publishing pictures of the girl.

– The heart is broken

Dagbladet met the Iranian journalist, author and human rights activist Masih Alinejad, when she was at the Storting under the auspices of Høyre’s women’s network in 2020. Alinejad is a strong critic of the Iranian regime and lives in exile in the USA.

She runs the organization My Stealthy Freedom, which is a campaign to get rid of the hijab requirement in Iran. Alinejad has received a number of awards for her work, and was named to, among other things woman of the year by TIME magazine.

Shakes the world: – We are terrified

Now she writes the following on social media:

“My heart is broken. Now we are at the anniversary of the murder of #MahsaAmini, committed by the moral police. Then these horrific images of #ArminaGaravand, the 16-year-old lying in a coma in Iran after what is supposed to be a confrontation with Iran’s morality police, appear. I cry …”.

Alinejad follows the case closely, and provides constant updates and opinions:

– We, the women, are the greatest enemy of the Islamic Republic. That is why they kill women every day, by forcing them to hide their true selves. As long as the gender apartheid regime is in power in Iran, more women will be beaten or killed for showing their hair. We must put an end to the Islamic Republic, writes Alinejad.

– Unbearable

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock writes the following on X, formerly Twitter:

“A young woman in #Iran is fighting for her life again. Just because she showed her hair on the subway. It’s unbearable.”

The Iranian regime hardly wants a repeat of what happened a year ago, when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody, after being tortured to death by the morality police after wearing a hijab in an “inappropriate” way.

The young woman’s death led to massive protests and demonstrations against the regime. Both in Iran and elsewhere in the world. Dagbladet also had a leader on the case, one year after the death, on 17 September this year.
