At least 14 people were killed in a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in eastern Turkey on Friday. , Eight people died in the province of Elazig, six more in the neighboring province of Malatya, the civil protection agency said in the evening. Several buildings have collapsed.

Turkish television showed pictures of people panicking on the street. Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu had previously spoken of four deaths and several collapsed buildings, according to the Anadolu news agency.

The earthquake occurred at 8:55 p.m. in the Sivrice district, the civil protection agency said. There were 30 aftershocks; more than 400 rescue teams are on their way to the region.

The 4000 town of Sivrice is located south of the city of Elazig on a lake and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. The quake was felt in several parts of eastern Turkey near the borders with Iraq and Syria.
