13 injured when the MTA bus collided with a New York Subway column in the Bronx; young driver suffered a heart attack

A female driver and a dozen passengers were injured when an MTA bus collided with a New York City Subway pillar this morning in the Bronx.

The 44-year-old driver lost control of the steering wheel after suffering a medical episode, police said. In particular, she suffered cardiac arrest moments before the bus crashed.

A surveillance video released by Daily News shows that the bus left its lane on a curve uphill and crashed into a support pillar for Subway Lines 2 and 5 on Boston Road near West Farms Road in the Allerton neighborhood.

The bus’s wheels appeared to continue to spin after the female driver hit the pillar, the video shows. The woman was transferred to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical but stable condition.

All 12 bus passengers, including a girl, were injured, but authorities reported them in stable condition.

The bus’s front windshield was shattered and its front bumper was wrapped around the column. But the crash did not affect the structural integrity of the Metro tracks.

The driver is a 14-year veteran with a good record. She passed a semi-annual physical six months ago, said Richard Davey, head of NYC Transit.
