13 high-ranking officers of the Russian army detained after coup led by Yevgeny Prigozhin

At least 13 high-ranking officers of the Russian army have been detained after the coup organized by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the “Wagner” mercenary gang, the newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” reports, citing sources.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) began making arrests hours after the uprising, sources claim.

The arrests are being made to “cleanse” the ranks of the army, one of the sources said.

According to the information available to the newspaper, 15 Russian officers have been suspended or retired.

Among those detained by the FSB is also the commander of the Russian Air and Space Forces and the deputy commander of the Russian group fighting in Ukraine, General Sergey Surovikin, the sources claim. The general is in custody in Moscow and is being repeatedly interrogated. One of the sources said that Surovikins knew about the planning of the rebellion, but was not involved in it.

Surovikin has not been charged and could be released once Russian dictator Vladimir Putin decides what to do.

According to information available to “The Wall Street Journal”, Surovikin’s deputy, Colonel-General Andrei Yudins, and Deputy Chief of Military Intelligence, Lieutenant-General Vladimir Alekseev, were also detained.

They were later released, but their movements are restricted and they are being monitored. Yudin and Alekseev have been suspended from their positions.

Among the other detainees is the retired colonel-general Mihails Mizintsev, who previously held the position of deputy minister of defense and commanded the attack on Mariupol at the beginning of the repeated invasion of Ukraine, but since April 2023 he was in the “Wagner” group.
