10 Suspects Arrested in Clash Case in Bitung, Jakarta – Including Suspects of Hate Speech

The North Sulawesi (Sulut) Regional Police named 10 suspects in the clash case between mass organizations in the city Bitung. The suspects have now been arrested.

“To date, the ranks of the Ditreskrimum Polda North Sulawesi have arrested ten suspects who are suspected of being the perpetrators of the abuse,” said Head of Public Relations of the North Sulawesi Police, Commissioner Iis Kristian in Manado, as reported BetweenMonday (4/12/2023).

Iis said that the North Sulawesi Regional Police’s Ditreskrimsus staff had also arrested another person. This person is suspected of being the perpetrator of the ITE Law crime, namely hate speech.

“We convey the arrest of the perpetrator who is suspected of committing the crime of conveying hate speech via a social media platform,” he said.

“Furthermore, on Friday (1/12), the perpetrator who owned the account on one of the social media platforms was arrested,” he added.

From the perpetrator, investigators seized a cellphone, screenshots of posts containing hate speech and the suspect’s social media accounts. This perpetrator with the initials FR is a housewife.

“The suspect in this hate speech has the initials FR, a housewife,” he said

Then, the Ditreskrimsus Polda North Sulawesi has also coordinated with investigators from the East Kalimantan Police, because another alleged perpetrator of hate speech has the initials MK. The other perpetrator has been arrested and is currently being handled by the East Kalimantan Regional Police.

“All the suspects, both those accused of abuse and hate speech, have now been detained at the North Sulawesi Regional Police Detention Center. Except for the MK suspect, because they are being handled at the East Kalimantan Regional Police,” he said.

The two suspects of hate speech are subject to Article 45a paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 28 paragraph (2) of the Republic of Indonesia Law number 19 of 2017 concerning amendments to the Republic of Indonesia Law number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions with a maximum threat of 6 years in prison and a maximum fine of Rp. 1 billion.
