Autobahn 81 / Aries: fatal traffic accident
Last Monday evening, around 9:45 p.m., road users reported a major traffic accident on the motorway in the direction of Würzburg in the area of the Jagsttal service area via an emergency call. Initial investigations revealed that a 36-year-old driver of a Volvo car from the Würzburg area had probably drifted off the lane to the right in a long left-hand bend immediately in front of the rest area due to excessive speed. At the beginning of the rest area he crashed into the rising embankment and guardrail there. The Volvo took off, flew about 80 meters through the air and finally came to rest on the embankment. The severity of the impact destroyed the vehicle in such a way that individual parts were up to 400 m away from the final position. Large parts of the embankment were thrown onto the opposite lane in the direction of Heilbronn. As a result, the entire lane in the direction of Würzburg had to be closed until around 00:30. The fire brigade could only rescue the driver of the Volvo dead from his vehicle. The cause of the accident was property damage amounting to approx. 37,000 euros to the vehicle and the surrounding buildings. The Möckmühl and Widdern fire brigades were on site with 34 emergency services and 7 vehicles. The rescue service was on duty with 2 emergency vehicles and a team of emergency doctors. The Tauberbischofsheim motorway maintenance authority provided support with traffic control and secured the scene of the accident.
