45468 Mh.-urban areas: On February 10th of this year, a 21-year-old Romanian national attacked a 77-year-old woman from Mülheim after she had withdrawn money from an ATM on Wallstrasse. The woman approached the elderly woman and asked her to write something in a folder held in front of her. When the elderly woman did not respond, the robber snatched the handbag from the Mülheim woman and fled. Attentive passers-by, who became aware of the lady’s screams, held the woman until the police officers arrived.

The Mülheim district court issued an arrest warrant for the alleged thief. Investigations by the responsible Criminal Police Office 35, including the evaluation of video recordings, also revealed that the suspect probably committed six other similar acts in Mülheim an der Ruhr between December 3, 2020 and February 10, 2021. In all cases, the robber intercepted elderly citizens after withdrawing money and then involved them in a conversation. By distracting the elderly, she tried to get hold of the cash that had been withdrawn. In these cases too, the use of force was sometimes a means to an end. In a nationwide survey, references to another six crimes with the same procedure between December 17 and January 27 in the cities of Mönchengladbach, Leverkusen and Cologne were discovered. Here, too, there is a suspicion that the 21-year-old has committed similar crimes. Criminal Investigation Office 35 and the Duisburg Public Prosecutor’s Office have taken on the central processing of all offenses. (ChWi / MUe)
