Introduction of a separate award for women short film directors: Encouraging talented women to positively influence the future of the film industry

As the official partner of the Cannes Film Festival for more than 24 years, L’Oréal Paris has always been a feminist brand committed to empowering women, especially in the world of film through its privileged relationship with iconic actresses who embody the values of Embody brand. Now L’Oréal Paris is going one step further with this commitment and is launching its own award program for women in film. Thanks to their flexible format and relatively low entry barriers, short films have long been considered the future of the film industry. Hence, this award will encourage promising women directors to pursue their creative ambitions and provide funding to help women overcome the obstacles they encounter.

“This exciting partnership with L’Oréal Paris is a natural extension of the brand’s continued support for Cannes and the wider film community,” says Thierry Frémaux, Director of the Cannes International Film Festival. “The Lights On Women Award provides a much-needed opportunity to honor a deserving creator and is in line with the broader commitment of the short film competition and international film school short film programs to recognizing tomorrow’s female talent,” he added.

There is an urgent need to change the gender imbalance in the film industry

With only 10.7% female directors in Hollywood in 2019, it shows that the underrepresentation of women in the film industry is one of the biggest problems facing the creative industry. * Furthermore, only 21.3% of short films are directed by women and only 7 women have ever been nominated for best director at the Academy Awards *. Given these numbers, there is an urgent need to break down prejudice and achieve greater gender balance.

A unique award intended to promote creativity and empowerment

The winner of the first Lights On Women Award will receive financial support of up to EUR 30,000. This unique recognition also provides the winner with a platform for greater visibility and access to a “sisterhood” of cinematic talent.

“L’Oréal Paris is a feminine and feminist brand; we believe in empowering women to overcome barriers in order to have a long-term positive and social impact within their communities,” says Delphine Viguier-Hovasse, Global Brand President, L’Oréal Paris. “The massive underrepresentation of women in film requires large-scale support, and I am proud to use our branding platform and resources to advocate women’s visibility with the help of the incredible actresses who represent our brand. I bet I am very happy to empower talented women and give them space to shine. ”

The actress Kate Winslet added, “What an honor to be a judge on this remarkable recognition for women filmmakers and to have the opportunity to celebrate such incredible talent. It is important that we, as a community, work together to achieve gender parity in our industry, and I do I am very pleased to support the L’Oréal Paris family in this important initiative. ”
