One of the most basic consumer rights is the right to be safe. The monitoring of the international movement of goods to or from Germany contributes significantly to this and takes place not only at the border, but also at the customs offices inland.

If the customs find questionable goods, they are handed over to the relevant specialist authority for inspection. If the goods do not comply with the law or are even dangerous, they are withdrawn from the market in order to protect citizens from harm. Incorrectly used test seals, unsafe children’s toys or unauthorized drugs are just a few examples of why customs pay close attention to controls and work closely with the specialist authorities.

Such goods are often counterfeit products. Of course, the anonymous manufacturers assume no liability or responsibility for such products. “Consumers are always well advised to buy original products for which the manufacturer offers a guarantee and, above all, the goods do not pose a hidden danger to health and life,” says Rainer Wanzke, press spokesman for the main customs office in Krefeld. “This can also be the case with clothing plagiarism, which at first glance appears to be banal articles. The counterfeiters don’t take it too seriously here. Inferior and non-approved materials are often used in the manufacture, which can cause severe skin irritation and allergies,” says Rainer Wanzke continues.

Just last week, two consignments from Turkey with over 300, presumably counterfeit items of clothing and bags from well-known manufacturers had to be withdrawn from the Mönchengladbach customs office. The consignments presented for customs clearance were shown as gifts for a man from Mönchengladbach and, according to his declaration, were intended to be used for private purposes.

After the customs officers stopped the consignments, they informed the rights holders of the original goods. The suspected forgeries are now examined and assessed. The right holders then have the option of taking civil action against the importer. The suspected counterfeit goods are then destroyed under customs supervision.
