German consumers pay almost the highest electricity prices worldwide. But within Germany there are exorbitant price differences, especially between the expensive basic service and the cheapest local provider. This is shown by an analysis of 6316 cities in Germany that the comparison portal Current information has now performed.

The average price difference between the basic supplier and the cheapest alternative offer is 410 euros. Consumers in Cadolzburg, Glinde and Barsbüttel can save more than 600 euros by switching, while in the municipalities of Lindenberg and Oberreute it is only 30 euros.

“Anyone who changes from the basic supplier tariff to a low tariff – without prepayment, deposit or package tariff – saves around 410 euros per year with an annual consumption of 3500 kWh, says Dr. Jörg Heidjann, Managing Director of the TÜV-tested comparison portal StromAuskunft.de.

Stiftung Warentest, the Federal Network Agency and the North Rhine – Westphalia consumer center also recommend switching providers from the basic supply.

Consumers in Bavaria, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hesse and Thuringia can save at least 400 euros. Baden – Württemberg, Rhineland – Palatinate and Schleswig – Holstein are pleased.
