The National Army (NL) will undergo a transformation, where the first steps will be taken this year as well. This is what President Chandrikapersad Santokhi said yesterday at his first annual speech in an extraordinary public meeting of the National Assembly in Independence Square. “A core task of course remains the defense of our territory. Not so much against foreign powers, but against other threats to our state, ”said the president.
The head of state said that the transformation should make military personnel much more visible, at the borders, in Suriname’s territorial waters and inland. “They will help protect our natural resources on land and sea,” said Santokhi.
The head of state also indicated that mobility on inland waterways will be enhanced, while the Navy and the Coast Guard will act together. “Illegal mining and exploitation must be prevented. Current military posts will be evaluated for their role, duties and effectiveness, and adjusted with these goals in mind. Our strategic infrastructure and our manufacturing sectors must remain protected ”.
