The 3sat documentary “Manhattan’s Plan for the Future” by Michael Trabitzsch on Saturday, February 8, 2020, 7:20 pm shows how a metropolis like New York is preparing for the upcoming challenges. In the documentary, people have their say who are working to keep New York a liveable, competitive city in the future. They provide insights into solutions that they have found for urban and social problems. Outstanding architectural examples make it clear how much living, working, education, art, consumption and, last but not least, transport and infrastructure must be thought of as a symbiosis so that mega-cities can withstand the challenges of the 21st century.
The mass of commuters and tourists that flock to Midtown Manhattan every day is increasing rapidly. To save the city from collapse, new solutions for public transport must be found. One of them is that the Vanderbilt office tower has made much of its floor space available to the public. This creates space for an additional exit from Grand Central Station, the city’s transport hub.
The architect Liz Diller and her office have transformed disused high tracks into a park landscape and, with the High Line Park, opened up a new district for New York. The Hudson Yards building complex, which opened in 2019, is embedded in spacious green spaces and combines living, culture and consumption – and could serve as a model for other metropolises. A new campus is being built for Columbia University in West Harlem, designed by star architect Renzo Piano. A campus that opens up to the city and is accessible to everyone.
