Zwinkels extends ADO contract and remains longest serving Eredivisie player | NOW

Robert Zwinkels also plays for ADO Den Haag next season. The 37-year-old goalkeeper, who is the longest-serving player in the Eredivisie, has extended his expiring contract by one year.

Zwinkels starts his sixteenth year with ADO, the club for which he made his debut in the Eredivisie in February 2005. He never played for a club other than the Hague formation, with which he was only active in the then Jupiler League in the 2007/2008 season.

Due to the contract extension of the Westlander, PEC Zwolle defender Bram van Polen remains the number two on the list of longest serving players. 34-year-old Van Polen came from Vitesse in 2007 and never wore a shirt other than that of ‘De Blauwvingers’.

Zwinkels does not attach too much importance to the fact that he is the longest serving Eredivisie player. “That has been the case for four or five years. I don’t think it is that special anymore. More importantly, I still enjoy myself at ADO”, he says in a reaction to his contract extension on the ADO website. “The fire has not yet gone out. You can only stop once, so I will continue to have fun.”

Zwinkels was often the second keeper

Zwinkels was not always the first goalkeeper in his years at ADO. Only in the seasons 2008/2009, 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 did he play more than twenty league games. In total he played 140 Eredivisie matches.

Last season Zwinkels held the first five Eredivisie matches, after which he got injured and competitor Luuk Koopmans took his chance.

For the time being, it seems that 26-year-old Koopmans will also be the first goalkeeper at the CARS Jeans Stadium next season, although he was associated with a transfer to sc Heerenveen this summer.
