Zverev to Face Tough Competition at Acapulco Open in Recovery Phase After Hurricane

Zverev, sixth in the world ranking, has two wins in two matches against Altmaier, ATP’s 55th racket, but in both matches ‘Sascha’ had to show his best tennis to win; At the 2022 Australian Open he won 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and at the 2023 US Open he won 7-6 (3), 6-1, 7-6 (1).

In the recovery phase from a terrible hurricane that devastated the port last October, Acapulco will host the tournament that will take place on a hard court with a prize pool of $2,377,565.

In addition to Zverev, five other of the 12 best players in the world will be among the favorites, the Danish Holger Rune (7), the Australian Alex De Minaur (9), defending champion, the American Taylor Fritz (10), the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (11) and the Norwegian Casper Ruud (12).

One of the figures to follow will be the Australian Jordan Thompson, who this Saturday won the Los Cabos Tennis Open after eliminating Zverev in the semifinal and Rudd in the final. He arrives in Acapulco in great shape and with confidence.

In the first round Thompson will play against a figure from the ‘quality’ and, if he wins, he would have the prodigious and unpredictable Rune in the second round, in case the Dane advances.

The Open is the main tournament in Latin America, which has been attended by the best players of the 21st century, except the Swiss Roger Federer.

The Spaniards Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer have won four times, as has the Austrian Thomas Muster, so they are the top title holders.

Spain, the country with the most championships, has three other champions: Francisco Clavet, in 1997; Carlos Moya (2002 and 2004); Nicolás Almagro (2008 and 2009).
