Ulrich Bremi presided over the National Council in 1990/91. He then resigned after almost 30 years in politics.

Ulrich Bremi, born in Zurich in 1929, was one of the most prominent Swiss politicians of the 1970s to 1990s. From 1975 to 1991 he was a member of the National Council and a widely acclaimed voice of Zurich Freedom.
Before that, from 1963 to 1975, he was already active in the Zurich Cantonal Council and – as later in Bern – was parliamentary group president. In the 1973/74 term of office, he was President of the Cantonal Council, making him the highest citizen of Zurich. He presided over the National Council in his last year in office, 1990/91, which made him the highest Swiss for a year.
Business man
Above all, Ulrich Bremi was also a figure in the economy. He completed his training at the metalworking school in Winterthur and studied mechanical engineering at the ETH Zurich. After his first professional experience at Firestone AG in Pratteln, he soon headed Bauer AG (today: Kaba Group). In the 1990s he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Georg Fischer AG in Schaffhausen and Swiss Re in Zurich. Between 1985 and 1999 he was also a member of the board of directors of Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (today: CS).

He also worked at Zurich Airport. From 1991 to 2000, before privatization, Bremi presided over the airport real estate company, from 1988 to 1999 he was on the board of directors of NZZ before, which announced the death of Bremi on Friday morning. From 2005 to 2008 he was President of the ETH Zurich Foundation.
Bremi lived in Zollikon, his wife Anja Bremi-Forrer, with whom he had been married since 1964, died in 2018. The marriage resulted in two daughters. Zollikon’s current mayor Sascha Ullmann (GLP) is Bremi’s son-in-law.
