“When the sun is at its southernmost point, which is 25.19 degrees south latitude, it’s Martian winter.”
Unlike Earth, Mars has an orbital period of about 687 Earth days, which means one Martian year is equivalent to about 1.9 Earth years, so winters there are also much longer than on Earth.
“Mars winter can be as low as minus 100 degrees Celsius, which is colder than anywhere else on Earth,” Wang added.
However, Zhurong is designed to withstand low temperatures. It ensures the safe operation of the Mars patrol and exploration process.
“The battery installed in the solar wing is made of a special material called superhydrophobic material. So, it is cold-resistant,” said Peng Song, Deputy Design Director of Tianwen-1.
Also, Zhurong can save energy and reduce energy consumption by changing its working pattern in windy and sandy weather. So it’s safe.
