International football federation (FIFA) rejected the president’s request Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to deliver a video speech and deliver a message of peace before the final match World Cup 2022 will be held in Qatar on Sunday (18/12) tomorrow.
As reported CnnSaturday (12/17/2022), a source said Cnn that Ukraine’s presidential office has offered Zelensky to appear on video in front of fans at the Qatar stadium ahead of the final match between Argentina and France on Sunday (12/18) local time.
The office of the Ukrainian president would have said they were surprised by the negative response given by FIFA. It is unclear whether Zelensky’s video message will be delivered in person or if it was recorded in advance.
“We think FIFA wants to use its platform for the greater good,” the source said Cnn That.
However, talks between Ukraine and FIFA are still ongoing, according to the source. Cnn have contacted FIFA seeking comment, but have not yet received a response.
Zelensky’s request, while quite unusual, is not surprising. Ukraine has repeatedly used major world events, regardless of theme, to keep the global spotlight on Ukraine’s ongoing war.
Zelensky has appeared and given video speeches at various events, from the G20 summit in Bali to the prestigious Grammy and Cannes Film Festival music awards.
