Zelensky asks Visa and MasterCard to ban cards in Russia

Russia may be left without Visa and Mastercard

Due to the fact that the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine, the ban should be extended to the operation of these payment systems throughout the entire territory of the aggressor country.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky sent an official letter to the international payment systems Visa and MasterCard with a request to ban the operation of payment cards throughout Russia. Related Document made public People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

As stated in the message, due to the fact that Russia invaded Ukraine, the ban should be extended to the operation of bank cards of the two most common international payment systems throughout the entire territory of the aggressor country, and not just to the enterprises that fell under the sanctions.

Note that in connection with US sanctions v. Russia, Mastercard suspended the participation of Russian restricted banks in its system. We are talking about banks VTB, Otkritie, Sovcombank, Promsvyazbank and Novikombank.

The suspension of the bank’s participation in the payment system means that the Mastercard and Visa cards issued by it and its “daughter” will stop working abroad, as well as in foreign online stores. But operations within Russia on them will continue to take place.
